How Long Do Himalayan Salt Walls Last?

How Long Do Himalayan Salt Walls Last?

A Himalayan salt wall can be a long-lasting architectural feature when it is properly installed and maintained. But how long does a Himalayan salt wall actually last?

With proper installation and the right environmental conditions, a Himalayan salt wall can last for many decades, and even last indefinitely. The biggest factor affecting its longevity is not the age of the salt itself, but the environment surrounding it, particularly humidity and moisture.

What Determines the Lifespan of a Himalayan Salt Wall?

1. Humidity

Humidity is one of the most important considerations for a Himalayan salt wall. Salt naturally interacts with moisture in the air, so excessive humidity can cause the salt to absorb moisture and potentially deteriorate over time.

For best results, we recommend maintaining approximately 50% relative humidity around the salt wall. 60–65% humidity is acceptable, but humidity should not exceed 65%. Keeping humidity controlled helps protect the salt and reduce moisture-related issues.

2. Proper Installation

A professionally designed and installed salt wall is more likely to remain stable and attractive over time. Proper installation should take into consideration the wall structure, salt placement, support, lighting, ventilation, and surrounding building materials.

3. Exposure to Water

Direct exposure to water should be avoided. Salt walls should be protected from leaks, standing water, condensation, and repeated splashing. In spaces such as spas and wellness centers, appropriate humidity control and ventilation are especially important.

Can a Himalayan Salt Wall Last Forever?

Under the right conditions, the salt itself can potentially last indefinitely.

Himalayan salt is a naturally occurring mineral, and it does not have a conventional expiration date. The primary threat to a salt wall is environmental exposure—particularly excessive moisture.

When a salt wall is kept in a properly controlled environment, protected from direct water exposure, and installed correctly, there is no predetermined point at which the salt simply “expires." This means a well-maintained Himalayan salt wall can potentially remain part of a building for decades or even indefinitely.

How Can You Make a Himalayan Salt Wall Last Longer?

The best way to protect a salt wall is to control its environment. We recommend:

  1. Maintaining approximately 50-60% relative humidity

  1. Humidity not exceeding 65%

  1. Preventing direct exposure to water

  1. Using appropriate ventilation and dehumidification when necessary

  1. Working with experienced professionals for installation

  1. Regularly monitoring the room's humidity
